Precision Meets Emotion: Firdaus Studio's Excellence with Neumann Microphones
Firdaus Studio, an Initiative of Expo City Dubai
Dubai, June 9th, 2026 — In the heart of Expo City Dubai, Firdaus Studio was envisioned as a world-class orchestral recording and complete music production space in the Middle East, combining advanced technology, pristine acoustics, and a mission to cultivate a vibrant musical community. Designed to inspire both local and international artists, it pushes boundaries in creativity and sound.
Firdaus Studio reflects the city’s commitment to excellence and innovation. As part of a city of the future, the studio upholds the highest standards, ensuring its offerings align with Expo City’s vision of creating world-leading experiences.
Beyond being a studio, Firdaus Studio serves as a creative hub and the home of the Firdaus Orchestra, an all-female ensemble celebrating musical diversity.
Behind the studio’s technical brilliance is Navneeth Balachanderan, fondly known as Nav, a seasoned Lead Sound Engineer whose journey spans 15 years of live shows, studio sessions, and collaborations with some of the world’s biggest artists. As Nav explains, “We wanted to make the best recording facility in the Middle East.” Today, the studio supports a wide range of content: film scores, vocal recordings, music albums, and rich orchestral reinterpretations, often performed by the Firdaus Orchestra itself.
A Career Tuned to Excellence
Nav’s journey into the professional music world began in India, where he travelled extensively across the country, working with renowned artists from both Bollywood and the South Indian film industry. His transition to Dubai was marked by a pivotal role in building Firdaus Studio; not just operationally, but also through its technical design and configuration.
Over the years, Nav has built an impressive portfolio, with milestone projects including work with Coldplay, Beyoncé, and several notable scores for AR Rahman, including Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2. But at Firdaus Studio, it's about more than just star-studded projects; it's about crafting an immersive musical experience with precision and authenticity.
A Trusted Ally in Sound: Neumann Microphones
Firdaus Studio’s excellence extends beyond the walls of its live rooms. For Firdaus Studio’s live performances - held at Al Wasl Plaza in Expo City Dubai - the venue experiences high wind speeds, often creating obstacles for sound engineers trying to preserve the sound integrity of orchestral instruments.
During the Layali Firdaus live performances at Al Wasl Plaza, Nav introduced the Neumann MCM 114 for orchestral instruments; especially cellos, double basses, woodwinds, brass and qanun.
“In a live outdoor venue with heavy winds, clarity is usually the first thing to go,” Nav shares. “And one thing about these microphones is that you cannot take out a lot of low end out of a base, or a cello, as when you start doing that, you're going to lose the quality of sound of the instrument. So these were the only few mics with a Windscreen that felt like I was hearing the cello in its true nature”
Nav was particularly impressed by how little EQ or filtering was needed on the mixing console, saying the MCM 114s provided “a flatter, more natural sound similar to the KM 184s.”
The installation of the MCMs for the Layali Firdaus shows was handled by AgorA LLC, a trusted AV integrator known for their expertise in high-profile, technically demanding projects. Their role was instrumental in ensuring that the microphones were optimally positioned and secured for each orchestral section, enabling seamless sound capture across a wide variety of instruments.
While sound engineers often focus on specs, the true litmus test lies in the hands (and ears) of the musicians.
“One of our cellists came to me after the show and said, ‘I’ve never heard my cello sound like this in my ears. What did you do?’ That’s when I knew we’d hit something special,” recalls Nav.
Design That Performs Under Pressure
Nav emphasized that while he’s worked with many microphones over the years, very few had delivered such a visceral, satisfying sound on stage that musicians themselves could immediately notice. It was not just about volume or clarity - it was about emotional resonance.
One of the most underrated challenges in live sound is microphone stability and setup. In fast-paced, high-stakes environments, every second counts. The MCM 114’s rock-solid clip design offered a level of reliability that sound engineers dream of. Once attached, the mic stayed firmly in place - no shifting, no sagging, and no risk of detachment mid-performance.
“The clips are one of my favorite parts,” Nav shared. “You clip it on and it doesn’t move. These clips don’t flex or fall off. Once they’re on, they stay put.” In orchestral settings where positioning precision is crucial, that mechanical dependability cannot be overstated.
Clarity for the Audience, Integrity for the Artist
While many think of microphones as tools for the performers or the engineer, their ultimate role is to serve the audience. For Nav, capturing the full spectrum of each instrument means ensuring that every nuance: no matter how subtle; is conveyed to the listener.
“In an orchestra, every instrument contributes to the collective emotion of the piece,” he explained. “Even if the audience doesn’t consciously hear a specific instrument, they feel it. And if that sound is missing or muddy, the emotional experience is incomplete.”
The MCM 114 helps bridge that gap. By accurately reproducing the sound of each instrument, it creates a fuller, more immersive experience for the audience; one that honors the complexity and richness of a live orchestral performance.
Alice Macaluso, Brand Manager of Sennheiser at Venuetech, spoke about the Neumann MCMs: “We’re incredibly proud to have supplied the Neumann MCM 114s to AgorA LLC and Firdaus Studio. It’s rewarding to see how this microphone has elevated live performances in such a prestigious space. The positive feedback from both the engineers and musicians affirms our belief in the MCM’s ability to deliver uncompromising clarity and precision.”
The Neumann MCM 114 isn’t just another live microphone, it’s a performance partner. At Firdaus Studio and Firdaus Orchestra, it has become an essential part of the live sound arsenal, trusted by both engineers and musicians alike. In the words of Nav, it simplifies the complex and elevates the subtle, delivering a level of performance that not only meets but redefines expectations. From stability and sound quality to the emotional connection it fosters, the MCM 114 stands out as a game-changer in the world of live orchestral recording.
